ARIADNE has published two new videos on the Portal page which has been redesigned to accommodate the new additions.

The first of these videos is a short four minute tutorial, designed as a quick start guide, which explains how to use the ARIADNE Portal to search for records relating to the research question of “How many submarines were sunk around the British Isles during the First World War?”. It shows how to use the Time period (when), Map (where) and Getty AAT subjects (what) to refine the search results and demonstrates the power of open linked data for finding related resources from other sources.

The second video is an in-depth demonstration of the ARIADNE Portal by Julian Richards which last around 40 minutes. This starts with a short history of how ARIADNE developed from the first project over ten years ago and then how the Catalogue was developed based on the principles of what, where and when. There is a brief overview of the technical architecture and the aggregation process (12 minutes). Next, there is a detailed description of the Catalogue search function and all of the filters that can be used to refine the returned results, including how the multi-lingual aspects work. An examination of the information in each of the records shows how the metadata links to the original resource. Records can also be structured in a hierarchy in the Catalogue, as in a relational database, thanks to CIDOC CRM, as done for the THANADOS data collection. The video concludes with using the map tool and performing a temporal search where the Periodo time periods can be used.
